Festival International du Film d'Histoire de Pessac
There are moments in time where cinema, history and wine come together.
Since the Festival du Film d'Histoire de Pessac began, Domaine Clarence Dillon has been a part of it, regularly welcoming the president of this important cultural event, Mr. Alain Rousset and its jury.
This year, for the 20th edition of the event, Prince Robert of Luxembourg invited his guests to a luncheon
at Château La Mission Haut-Brion in the recently redecorated "Salle du Chapitre".
Among his guests were HE Yllejet Aliçka, Albanian Ambassador to France and author,
and Mr. Andreï Gratchev, former advisor to President Mikhaïl Gorbatchev, and his wife.

While discussing the theme of the Festival (this year: "Il était une foi: Le Communisme"),
guests were able to enjoy the Châteaux Laville Haut-Brion 2006 and Haut-Brion Blanc 2005
(with the Noix de St. Jacques à la Nage), Châteaux La Mission Haut-Brion 1995 and Haut-Brion 1990
(with the Canard au Vin, Haricots Verts et Pommes de terre à l’Anglaise) and
Château Bahans Haut-Brion 2001 (with the cheese tray). Clarendelle Amberwine 2003,
served with a Tarte aux Clémentines, provided a delicious finish to the meal.
Many guests, with a dreamy smile on their faces after such an exhaustive tour of Domaine Clarence Dillon's wines,
thought that they deserved a place as the "Eighth Art".

In the coolness of the early morning, our teams of harvesters began to cut red grapes in the vineyard of Château Haut-Brion.

Under a bright sun and a clear blue sky, the young merlot vines in Jardin, Tilleul, Haut-Plantey Nord and Moteur plots have been harvested.
The quality of the grapes matches the sentiment of our wine-making team as well as the predictions of the weather man: Outlook perfect!

Launch of the red grapes harvest at Château La Mission Haut-Brion!
Two teams of harvesters have started this Wednesday morning to pick the first bunches of red grapes at Château La Mission Haut-Brion.

The young merlot vine-plants were the first in line and more specifically the Sarget, Fernand, Fer â Cheval, Madame et les Ormières plots.
Jean Philippe Delmas and his technical team were very enthusiastic as to the great quality and ripeness of the grapes under this beautiful "indian summer" sky.

Château La Mission Haut-Brion honored with a distinction of Finest Wine Producer of the Year by the "Grand Guide des Vins de France 2010" of Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve
A crowning achievement following a quarter of a century of hard work!
|

|
Prince Robert of Luxembourg is one of the four "wine producers of the year" honored by this distinction of excellence for Château La Mission Haut-Brion in the most recent edition of the Bettane et Desseauve guide.
Prince Robert, the Dillon family and the entire Domaine Clarence Dillon team are very happy and proud for this distinction and honor. These recent accolades come as a reward for the patient endeavors and work achieved at this estate since the 1983 acquisition of Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion from the Woltner family. After more than four centuries of existence, the challenge was to update and improve the technical capacities of this estate and allow La Mission to shine through the quintessential richness of its historic terroir.
|
In 1983, the Dillon family instituted a massive replanting program for the vines. Following this, in 1987, a highly modern technology-based vat room was constructed. Later, the XVIIth century castle and chapel were entirely renovated. In 2007, a 1200m2 barrel room was constructed, which could be considered as a "true cathedral of wine"; with this were added a new white wine chai; modern bottling facility; extensive new storage capacity; tasting rooms; gardens; and finally a cloister which has become the new entrance for this fabled estate.

The assimilation of Château La Mission Haut-Brion to a first Growth by Liv-Ex, the most important wine exchange in the world, this past spring, the distinction conferred upon us by Messrs Bettane et Desseauve, and the praise received from wine lovers around the world, assure the entire team at DCD that a quarter of a century of meticulous work has finally paid off!
Château Laville Haut-Brion, the white wine of La Mission also enjoys the five-star classification in the recent Bettane et Desseauve guide. The comments attributed to the quality of La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion, the second red wine of La Mission are equally flattering when they state "a metamorphous and strength of character previously unknown in this wine". The inclusion of the vines of La Tour Haut-Brion into the Château La Mission Haut-Brion estate has without a doubt added depth and complexity to this second wine…

It goes without saying that one can never take such a success for granted and that the constant quest for excellence is never ending at this great estate! This tireless work will continue at La Mission for many centuries to come…

The promise of a beautiful summer…
Harvest of the white grapes started this Monday morning on the plot called
"Pinson-Sapinette" of Château Haut-Brion
As early as 7:30 am, harvesters were able to start cutting the first clusters of
sauvignon gris and sauvignon blanc. This early start allows us to retain
the aromatic freshness of the grape - an essential factor.

Everyone is optimistic. Summer was sunny, hot and dry. The grapes are very
healthy and their maturity homogeneous.
Potential alcohol is 14°, for a pH of 3.2.
This harvest gives us a lot of hope and reminds us, at this early stage, of the 2005 or 2000 vintages.

The Domaine Clarence Dillon team is reasonably confident. Let's hope
this nice weather will hold and allow the grapes to ripen to their full
potential...

Harvest also begins at Château La Mission Haut-Brion!
A simultaneous start…
Harvesters started working on the plot of the "Catholiques" at Château La Mission Haut-Brion
at the same moment as their colleagues at Château Haut-Brion.
It is rather unusual for the grapes dedicated to the production of our
Château Laville Haut-Brion to be cut the first day of the harvest, at
the same time as those for Château Haut-Brion white.

This shows a very satisfying and homogeneous maturity on the "terroir"
of Domaine Clarence Dillon.

The first technical analysis show a potential degree of 14° for a pH of
3.2. Could this be a vintage similar to 2000 and 2005 in the making!
Monday June 15, 2009
The 18th of June is a date to be noted down in the diaries of all the lovers of the top Bordeaux wines and superb books about them.
On this day the eagerly awaited reference work, Le Coeur de Bordeaux, Crus Classés de Graves will appear with its detailed accounts on the history of the properties and their prestigious wines.
Three globally recognized specialists, Hugh Johnson, Michel Bettane and James Lawther, have united their efforts with the talents of Alain Benoit, the impassioned photographer of the vineyards of Bordeaux, to make up the detailed portraits of sixteen areas.
They have described both red and white wines that have the distinction of a more than fifty year old Classification. These wines are proudly perpetuating a long tradition; formerly known as the cradle of the greatest Bordeaux wines, they now have become the heart.
These exceptional wines marry perfectly with great cuisine and today's most famous chefs (Anne-Sophie Pic, Georges Blanc, Daniel Boulud, Alain Passard, Régis Marcon …) have each created a special recipe to go with one of the Classified Growths. Also the head wine waiters of the most prestigious restaurants have shared their insights and commented on the relationship of the various dishes with these great wines of French heritage.
The opening night of VINEXPO 2009, traditionally organized by the Union des Crus Classés de Graves, will this year take place in the prestigeous setting of Château La Mission Haut-Brion, on Saturday, June 20th.
The five hundred guests will have the privilege to be present for the official launching of this work of which the English translation, published simultaneously in France, will be available in the United States, Great Britain, and numerous other countries as soon as this fall!
For more information regarding Le Cœur de Bordeaux, Les Crus Classés de Graves, you may visit the Internet site, http://www.theheartofbordeaux.com/ which will be up and running as of June 18th. The fans of the Crus Classés de Graves also may find even more detail on the site, www.crus-classes-de-graves.com should they wish to increase their knowledge.
Thursday April 2, 2009
In Bordeaux the most recent vintage is traditionally presented at the beginning of the spring following the harvest. Domaine Clarence Dillon has held to this tradition by opening its doors to the press and its retailers from March 30th through April 3rd.
Though but half way there, it is already obvious that the 2008 vintage is profiting from as high an interest as usual from this public of well informed professionals. With almost 850 people signed up for the five days, the four tasting rooms of Domaine Clarence Dillon (2 at Chateau Haut-Brion and 2 at Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion) are continually busy.
It is an extremely satisfying time for Prince Robert of Luxembourg, M. Jean Philippe Delmas and their entire team, as they work towards an exemplary welcome for those coming to discover this excellent vintage of 2008.

Château La Mission Haut-Brion joins the ranks of the First Growths, according to Liv-Ex!
|
Liv-Ex, the leading fine wine exchange site in the world, has just simulated a new classification for Gironde Wines and has elevated Château La Mission Haut-Brion to the rank of a Premier Grand Cru Classé!
Prince Robert of Luxemburg and the entire Domaine Clarence Dillon team are both delighted and proud of this recognition.

Passions, the magazine of Chopard, published in its latest issue a very complete portrait of Prince Robert of Luxembourg, President of Domaine Clarence Dillon, owner of Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion.
Thursday, June 19th, 2008
We know that the owners of Château Haut-Brion have been producing a second label of their wine dating back to at least the 1700s. We are not sure by what name this wine went until the last part of the 19th century. We have a label in our collection that dates back to 1907 and that clearly gives the name: Chateau Bahans Haut-Brion.

This name was borrowed from a family that owned a portion of land that for centuries now has been part of the Chateau Haut-Brion estate. We also know that there was once a castle that went by the same name. This is the history of how our second wine came to be known as Bahans.
In 2010 Domaine Clarence Dillon will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the acquisition by Clarence Dillon of Chateau Haut-Brion. This milestone will enable us to write a new page in the modern history of our second wine.
In recognition of three quarters of a century of presence of the Dillon family at Chateau Haut-Brion, Domaine Clarence Dillon has decided to mark the occasion by renaming our second wine "Le Clarence de Haut-Brion" and by bottling our second wine in the elegant "Haut-Brion" bottle, specially engraved with the mention: "Clarence".
It was Clarence Dillon himself who fifty years ago brought this bottle design to Chateau Haut-Brion and first began using this elegant form for the 1958 vintage.
Wine lovers the world over will be able to discover "Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2007" when they receive their first deliveries of this wine starting in December of 2009.
Thursday, June 12th, 2008
In 1983, the Dillon family, owners of Château Haut-Brion, acquired the neighbouring estate, Château La Misssion Haut-Brion. Over the last 25 years the entire estate has seen a renaissance. There has been enormous work in the vines and every building on the estate has been up-graded to modern standards. The final brush stroke was the construction of a modern barrel room, cellars, bottling facilities and tasting rooms which were all inaugurated in 2007. All of this is in line with the constant striving for perfection instilled into the family company, Domaine Clarence Dillon.
This quest for perfection will also be evident when wine-lovers the world over receive their first deliveries of La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion 2006, (the second label of Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion) later this year.

Domaine Clarence Dillon is pleased to announce that as is the case with the first wine, the bottle of this second label will now be graced with a raised glass seal including the "La Mission cross", indicative of all wines emanating from this great estate.
This improvement will also underline the change of profile for this wine that since the 2005 vintage has benefited from the integration of Chateau La Tour Haut-Brion into its blend. The last vintage produced of La Tour Haut-Brion is the 2005.
Prince Robert of Luxembourg and the entire team at Domaine Clarence Dillon have a great affection for this most eminent of Bordeaux estates. It is for this reason that we also wish to give a much greater focus to the second label so that it may be an illustrious ambassador for its big brother.
Jean-Philippe Delmas believes that the 2005, 2006 and 2007 vintages are the best ever produced under this label.
We also feel rewarded for all of our efforts by recent praise from such wine critics as Robert Parker Jr., who has included La Chapelle in his "outstanding" category of wines for the 2007 vintage. By attributing this wine a score of 89-91, Mr. Parker recognises that La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion 2007 is one of the greatest success stories in Bordeaux for this vintage!

On May 15th 26 journalists from all over the world gathered in London at the restaurant, The Square, for a super tasting of no less than 51 vintages of La Mission Haut-Brion. Prince Robert of Luxembourg extended this exceptional invitation in order to celebrate the three quarters of a century of Dillon Family ownership of the property.
Accompanying Prince Robert were Jean-Philippe Delmas, Estate Manager and Jean-Philippe Masclef, Maitre de Chai. They organized the morning with tastings composed of 7 successive flights of 6 wines. Their choices were made in order to assemble vintages with similar qualities and styles.
Forty two different vintages from the year 1953 through 2005 were served up for the appreciation of the expert palates of the attending journalists.
A lunch menu was prepared for the guests by the talented chef, Philip Howard co-owner with Nigel Platts-Martin of the restaurant, The Square.
Grilled Langoustine Tails with Gnocchi au Parmesan, Truffle butter and Mushroom puree were followed by a Whole Tail of grilled Monkfish, sliced and accompanied by Roast potatoes, and a Duxelle of Morels with garlic and rich juices. Then they served Breast of Pigeon with Creamed Cabbage accompanied by a crispy biscuit of foie gras au Madère. All was then brought to a close with a tray of good French cheese.
This delicious meal gave those present the opportunity to taste Chateau Laville Haut-Brion, the dry white wine of La Mission Haut-Brion. It was represented by four vintages, 2005, 1985, 1975, and 1966. The guests then moved on to enjoy and experience 9 exceptional years of La Mission Haut-Brion: 1975, 1961, 1959, 1955, 1945, 1929, 1982, 1989 followed by the famous vintage of 2000.
Thus came to a close this epic event which will surely have left an indelible impression on all those present on May 15th, at The Square in London.
The organization of the above would not have been possible without the help of the London Company, Farr Vintners, and in particular Mr. Tom Hudson who was the key man responsible. Clarence Dillon Wines provided the logistics of the event.
The following are links to articles written by some of those present at this vertical tasting:
Jeudi, 13 septembre 2007
Rather capricious all summer long, now the September weather has finally granted its favour to the winegrower.
Clear blue skies in Pessac during more than about twenty days enabled us to happily finish the white harvests on Tuesday, September 11th This also permitted the red grapes to reach their optimum maturity.
Then, it was another day full of sunshine when, on Tuesday September 13th, a hundred of our wine pickers were able to start cutting the young plants of merlot all over the Domaine.

Nevertheless, it was after a break of four days, on Tuesday September 18t that we finally began to harvest the best merlots of Château Haut-Brion, and then right after, on Wednesday September 19th, those of Château La Mission Haut-Brion.
Therefore, now these healthy and promising grapes, of great maturity and a nice balance of sugar / acidity are filling both the vats of Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion.
Tuesday, August 28th, 2007
It was early afternoon on August 28th when the first click of the sheers began the harvest by gathering the Sauvignon blanc grapes in a parcel named "Pinson Sapinette".
An innovation that morning had the pickers already there, passing along
the rows of vines, equipped with blowers to eliminate the morning dew
and facilitate the handpicking of absolutely dry bunches.
They were followed by a group of about twenty pickers who proceeded to
harvest only the ripest bunches. Then there came a meticulous and
selective picking which eliminated any damaged berries.
In summing up, the first results are promising with good concentration and a potential alcoholic degree of more than 14.
It is a good start for our 2007 harvest time!

The Crus Classés de Graves celebrate their Accabailles at the Château la Mission Haut-Brion on Sunday, 10 December 2006
"Accabailles"... This rather mysterious term denotes the traditional meal at the end of the Bordeaux harvest.
This year, the Union des Crus Classés de Graves had chosen the newly renovated Château La Mission Haut-Brion as the setting for the seventeenth year of this traditional celebration where the greatest names from European gastronomy are honoured.
